City Council appoints former treasurer to fill vacancy after Carmen Sierra’s retirement.
The Hartford City Council on Monday appointed former City Treasurer Adam Cloud to return to the elected office
following Carmen Sierra's abrupt retirement last week.
The appointment fills the remainder of Sierra's unexpired term and took effect immediately after the council approved the resolution.
Cloud previously served as Hartford's city treasurer and was appointed based on his experience and qualifications, according to the resolution approved by the council. The resolution says the appointment is intended to ensure the uninterrupted operation and continuity of the treasurer's office following the vacancy created by Sierra's departure.
Sierra retired unexpectedly on July 6, citing family reasons. Her departure came amid public criticism from former members of the city's pension commission over her leadership of Hartford's $1.1 billion pension system.
In a statement, Mayor Arunan Arulampalam backed the choice of Cloud to fill the seat.
"Given his experience managing the office I have no doubt he will hit the ground running again. I look forward to working with him," Arulampalam said.
