Former Hartford, state DPH employee named Springfield’s deputy health commissioner

The city of Springfield has hired a former Hartford city employee as its new deputy public health commissioner.

Aretha Townsend, who worked as a sanitarian for Hartford Health & Human Services and previously served as a project manager for the state Department of Public Health, was recently appointed to the new position in Masscahusett’s third-largest city, officials in Springfield announced Wednesday.

Locally, Townsend also served as a project manager responsible for a Vaccine Response Team for the United Way of Connecticut.

Townsend has worked as an assistant program manager analyzing health data in Nigeria, and as a contractor for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Dulles, Virginia,

She also served as laboratory coordinator for Oglethorpe University in Brookhaven, Georgia, and has worked on projects in London and Costa Rica.
