Former Enfield school proposed for 38 apartments for residents 55 and older

A former Enfield school that has been vacant for more than nine years would be converted into 38 apartments for residents 55 and older under an application submitted to town planners.

Enfield-based NHR LLC is seeking approval to redevelop the former Nathan Hale School at 5 Taylor Road into Nathan Hale Apartments. The application identifies Chris Marszalek as the company’s contact. Marszalek controls a company, Our Town Home Buyers LLC, that purchased the property in February for $500,000, property records show.

The proposal is on the Planning and Zoning Commission’s Sept. 24 agenda. NHR is seeking both a zone change for the approximately 8.5-acre property and site plan approval for the apartment conversion.

The approximately 47,756-square-foot school has been vacant since June 2017 and has experienced deterioration and vandalism, according to a project narrative prepared by DiBattisto Associates.

The proposal calls for rehabilitating the existing building while retaining its footprint. Plans include studios, one-bedroom apartments and six townhouse-style units, along with exterior renovations, landscaping and improvements to parking areas and pedestrian access.

Architectural drawings show new pitched-roof elements and individual entrances along portions of the former school’s exterior.

The property is near Hazard Avenue and Scitico Village and across from the Green Manor recreational area.
