For the fifth consecutive year, the biggest threat to wedding day plans wasn’t the weather or in-laws — it was the caterer.
Vendor failures were the leading cause of paid wedding insurance claims in 2025, accounting for 55% of all payouts, according to new data from Hartford-based insurer Travelers Cos.
The share marks a sharp rise from roughly 27% in 2024.
“People invest so much time, energy and money into making their wedding day perfect,” said Deidre LeBlanc, vice president of specialty lines for personal insurance at Travelers. “Knowing what has gone wrong for others is one of the best ways to prepare, and having the right protection in place can provide peace of mind when the unforeseeable occurs.”
Other leading claim causes in 2025 included illness or injury (16%), extreme weather (10%), accidental damage or injury (6%) and military deployment (3%).
Travelers recommends that couples vet vendors thoroughly, checking reviews and seeking referrals before placing any deposits.
The company publishes Wedding Protector Plan covers events from the rehearsal dinner through a post-wedding brunch.
Travelers conducts the analysis annually based on claims filed under its wedding and special event insurance policies.
