Foreclosure can’t strip CT voters of ballot

Losing a home to foreclosure does not strip a Connecticut resident of his right to vote, the secretary of the state says.

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz said recent numbers showing increased foreclosure rates in Connecticut and the nation have raised the specter of political activists challenging the legitimacy of voters whose homes have been seized to satisfy mortgage debt.

“No registered or eligible voter who has undergone the turmoil of being displaced from their home due to foreclosure will be denied their unalienable right to vote,” Bysiewicz said in a statement Wednesday.

She urged foreclosure victims to check with their local registrar of voters and, if need be, fill out a new registration card before 8 p.m. on Oct. 26 – the eligibility deadline in Connecticut to vote in the Nov. 2 election.
