Two Connecticut nonprofits have been named to Forbes’ annual top charities list.
The business magazine named Stamford-based Americares the 10th largest charity in the country, taking in a total of $1.22 billion in private donations during the 2021 fiscal year.
Americares, a disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization, received $13 million in government support during the fiscal year. It had $1.3 billion in expenses and lost $45 million.
Forbes gave Americares an efficiency rating – the percent of private donations remaining after deducting the costs of getting them – of 99%.
Fairfield-based Save the Children Federation ranked No. 44, with private donations totalling $424 million.
Save the Children provides programs in health and nutrition, education and emergency response. It saw total revenue of $946 million last year, including $398 million in government support.
The organization’s expenses were $35 million, giving it a $35 million surplus.
Forbes compiles its top 100 list based on IRS Form 990 filings, audited financial statements, annual reports or Forbes survey forms that charities fill out and return.
Topping the 2022 list was Feeding America, a Chicago-based organization that helps supply a network of more than 200 U.S. regional and local food banks. It received $4.06 billion in donations.
“Much of that haul reflects donated food from large corporations, but it also received cash from more than 750,000 individual donors, reflecting a pandemic heightened awareness of food insecurity in the U.S.,” according to Forbes.
This is the first time in the top 100 list’s 24-year history that a food charity has come in No. 1.
