Food service operator to lay off 65 UB workers

A food-service company has notified the state it will lay off 65 employees who work for it at the University of Bridgeport in May.

The state Department of Labor received the Worker Adjustment & Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice from the France-headquartered Sodexo on Friday.

Curtis Stancil, director of human resources for the company’s university segment, Northeast region, did not immediately respond to a request for comment this week.

Sodexo informed the university last week that a “decision was made to terminate the contractual agreement” related to the university’s dining operations.

The company’s last day of providing food service operations on the campus will be on Monday, May 11. All frontline employees working there will lose their jobs as of that date. Management separations are scheduled to occur on June 8, according to the notice.

Timothy Goral, executive director of media relations with the university, said food-service contracts are reviewed periodically as a normal part of operations.

While the company is headquartered in France, it has a regional office in Waltham, Mass. It provides catering, facilities management, and personal and home services, and has a presence in 67 countries, according to its website.

The university’s spring semester is scheduled to wrap up in May, with final exams currently slated to take place through May 8. Due to the coronavirus health situation, all classes have shifted online.
