First Energy Independence project to debut Thursday

The first completed project under Connecticut’s 2005 Energy Independence Act officially will launch at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Kimberly-Clark facility in New Milford.

This $57 million project built a combined heat and power unit allowing the paper mill to generate its own heat and 35 megawatts of electricity to be sold back onto the grid.

The Energy Independence Act provided a grant to help fund the project. State Sen. John Fonfara, D-Hartford, the Senate chairman of the Connecticut Legislature’s Energy and Technology Committee, will cut the ribbon opening the new power unit.

The plant provides 350 jobs to manufacture sanitary paper products such as towels, tissues and napkins. The combined heat and power unit helps the facility reduce electricity, one of its largest costs.
