First 2013 case of horse with Triple E reported

The state’s agriculture department said Tuesday that a miniature horse in Griswold has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis. It’s the first case this year.

A veterinarian euthanized the animal after it became sick Sept. 8. The horse had not been vaccinated and had not traveled recently.

Officials are reminding horse owners to make sure their horses’ vaccinations for EEE and West Nile Virus are current.

As of last week, officials in 13 states have reported 123 EEE cases involving horses.
