Firms face $153K fine over CT naval base contamination

Two Pennsylvania companies face a $153,070 fine for failing to disclose lead paint contamination at two New England naval bases, including the Groton submarine base.

A complaint filed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency alleges that Northeast Housing, LLC and Balfour Beatty Military Housing Management, LLC – both of Newtown Square, Pa. – failed on multiple occasions over several years to notify prospective tenant about potential lead paint hazards in housing managed  by the companies on the Navy bases in Groton, Conn. and Kittery, Maine.

The lead disclosure rule requires owners of residential housing built before 1978 to disclose any knowledge of lead-based paint on the property to potential renters and purchasers.

EPA alleges Northeast and Balfour entered into 13 contracts to leasing the housing to military personnel from 2007 to 2010 at the Groton and Maine bases.

The companies face a maximum fine of $153,070.
