Final Freight Street Corridor building in Waterbury set for demolition

Demolition of the last remaining building on Waterbury’s Freight Street Corridor is set to begin this week, city officials said.

A press conference has been scheduled for Thursday morning to kick off the demolition of the 138,304-square-foot building at 170 Freight St. In December 2020, the city acquired the 6-acre property containing the old industrial building for $2.3 million.

It is the last existing building on the Freight Street Corridor, which includes 130 Freight, 170 Freight and 000 West Main streets. The three properties, all now owned by the city, had previously been an industrial complex for the Anaconda American Brass Co.

The full corridor consists of 20.59 acres of brownfield-contaminated land. After cleanup, the city’s goal is to eventually offer the site for transit-oriented redevelopment. The area is 0.5 miles away from the city’s downtown train station and 0.5 miles from access to Route 8 and Interstate 84.

The city has assembled more than $68 million, mostly from state and federal grants, to upgrade the Freight Street Corridor.
