Feds retry sale of idle Stratford engine plant

The federal government’s properties administrator is trying again to sell the idle 78-acre Stratford Army Engine plant through a sealed-bid auction.

The site is severely contaminated and under the terms of the auction, the buyer will be obligated to remediate it, authorities said. The plant, where turbine engines were made for the Army, closed following the 1995 round of military base and facilities closings.

A minimum bid price was not disclosed.

The General Services Administration agreed to sell the site along the Housatonic River for $9.6 million in 2008 to a developer who wanted to turn the site into a movie studio. The deal collapsed because investors couldn’t secure enough funding.
