Feds award $1.2M for housing jobs programs

Three Connecticut housing authorities have received $1.2 million in federal funds to find jobs for their residents. The funding comes from the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Hartford Housing Authority will receive $492,000; the New Haven housing authority, $486,000; and, the Norwalk housing authority, $246,000.

This funding, under HUD’s Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency – Service Coordinators program, will be used to hire or retain “service coordinators” to help residents achieve economic and housing independence by connecting residents with career and educational opportunities.

The HUD program aims to encourage local strategies that link public housing assistance with public and private resources to enable participating families to increase earned income; reduce or eliminate the need for welfare assistance; and, make progress toward achieving economic independence and housing self-sufficiency.
