Farmington police warn residents of fake zoning invoice scam

While businesses and developers routinely pay fees to the town planning office, one invoice making the rounds is pure fiction.

The Farmington Police Department issued an alert Tuesday after residents reported receiving fraudulent invoices claiming to be from the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission and demanding payment via wire transfer.

The fake documents request wire transfers of $4,950 for various fees including application submissions, zoning reviews and environmental impact assessments.
“These invoices are NOT legitimate,” police said in a social media post. “The Town will never demand unexpected payments by email or mail without prior communication.”

The scam documents bear the town seal and list Town Hall’s address on Monteith Drive, but police said they are entirely fraudulent.

Officials urged residents not to send money, click any links or share personal information in response to the fake invoices.

Anyone who receives one of the fraudulent letters or emails should contact the Farmington Police Department or the Town Planning Office to verify its authenticity before taking any action.
