Mystic Pizza, featured in the 1988 eponymous film starring Julia Roberts and Matt Damon, will pay more than $105,000 to employees it underpaid, the state Department of Labor announced Thursday.
Following three complaints from workers, DOL investigators determined that owner John Zelepos paid some employees as little as $5.69, which is less than the state’s $8.70 minimum wage. Others worked as much as 93 hours a week and did not receive overtime, officials said.
The violations took place between May 2012 and June 2014. Zelepos will pay an additional $23,400 in civil penalties.
The restaurant, located in the Mystic village section of Groton, is not affiliated with Mystic Pizza II of North Stonington, the department noted.
