For the institution’s efforts to reduce impact on the environment, the Bridgeport Regional Business council awarded Fairfield University with the 2011 Santa Energy Green Business Award.
The award, sponsored by Bridgeport’s Santa Energy, recognizes regional businesses leading in environmentally friendly products services and practices.
Fairfield University reduced its carbon footprint by 7 percent last year, using a hybrid shuttle bus, an eco-friendly power plant, energy smart lights and a campus garden.
The university is part of the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, calling greater efforts toward sustainability in higher education.
