Ex-Newington steel plant offers refuge

The owner of a former Newington steel fabrication plant is offering the 136,000-square-foot facility as a temporary refuge for businesses displaced by snowstorms.

The former Standard Structural Steel Co. building at 90 Day St. has 30-foot high ceilings and 15 cranes with up to a 40-ton capacity. The building is divided into four huge bays and a six-car rail siding. It sits on approximately 16 acres that straddle Newington and West Hartford.

Owner Linda Lough, daughter of Joe Bachta who later bought the property and renamed it  International Bridge and Iron Co., said she is responding to recent rash of area- and statewide roof collapses due to heavy snow.

“My father and I understood as business owners the adversity and challenges that one faces in the day to day operations from both internal and external forces,” Lough said. “Sometimes the challenges seem unfair particularly when they are out of your control like Mother Nature’s recent snowy January.  I know that my father would be pleased to help others whose businesses have been disrupted.”
