Ex-Hebron shopowner guilty of $152K tax fraud

A former Hebron flooring retailer was convicted Wednesday of evading $152,000 in federal income taxes, authorities say.

Alan Miskunas, 51, former owner of Bolton Flooring Center, waived his right to indictment and pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford to one count of filing a false tax return, prosecutors said.

He faces a maximum three-year prison term and a $250,000 fine when sentenced May 2. He also remains on the hook to the IRS for more than $152,000 in unpaid taxes, interest and penalties, officials said.

According to authorities, Miskunas under-reported his business income on his 2003 and 2004 tax returns, cheating the taxman out of $64,000 in personal income taxes on that income.

Also, he didn’t file returns for 2005 and 2006, failing to pay more than $88,000 in taxes for those years, investigators said.
