Hartford-Boston utility provider Eversource said it plans to invest $50 million on improvement to Connecticut gas mains this year.
The utility will replace approximately 103,000 feet of cast iron and steel pipe with plastic pipe, which Eversource said is safer, more resistant to corrosion, more durable and less susceptible to changes in underground temperatures.
Eversource is in the midst of replacing Torrington, Waterbury and Meriden gas mains. Stamford work is on deck.
The company said it has replaced nearly 100 miles of older gas main in the past five years. That comes out to an average of 105,600 feet per year.
