ESPN pinch hits Francona for Valentine

Looks like Terry Francona and Bobby Valentine switched jobs.

Bristol sports programmer ESPN hired Francona — the former Boston Red Sox manager — to replace Valentine as an analyst on Sunday Night Baseball, less than a week after Valentine took over Francona’s old job managing the Red Sox.

Francona, 52, made his ESPN debut on Monday night on SportsCenter and Baseball Tonight, covering Major League Baseball’s winter meetings in Dallas. In his new role, Francona not only will serve as an analyst on Sunday Night Baseball but provide analysis on Baseball Tonight and ESPN’s coverage of the Little League World Series.

ESPN did not disclose Francona’s contract terms.

Francona managed the Red Sox from 2004 to 2011, winning the World Series in 2004 and 2007. Before that, he managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 1997-2000. His only previous broadcast experience was providing analysis of the 2011 American League Championship Series for Fox Sports.

Valentine, 61, previously managed the Texas Rangers and New York Mets before taking on his analyst role for ESPN. On Dec. 1, Valentine was announced as Francona’s replacement to manage the Red Sox.
