ESPN: CT Sun to be sold for about $300M, relocated to Houston

The Connecticut Sun are being sold and are expected to relocate to Houston after the 2026 season, according to a report by ESPN citing sources.

The deal, valued at about $300 million, would set a record price for a WNBA franchise. The buyers are affiliated with ownership of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, the Fertitta family, according to the report.

The team is expected to remain in Uncasville for the 2026 season before moving to Texas in 2027, ESPN reported. Two games this year are scheduled to be played in Hartford at the PeoplesBank Arena.

Houston previously had a WNBA team — the Comets — one of the league’s original franchises, which ceased operations in 2008. The report said the relocated team is expected to use that name.

The reported agreement follows months of uncertainty surrounding the team’s future.

The Sun have been owned by the Mohegan Tribe since 2003, when the franchise moved from Orlando to Uncasville.

The franchise was put up for sale in 2024, drawing multiple competing bids, including a reported offer of more than $300 million from a Boston investment group and a Hartford-backed proposal tied to billionaire Marc Lasry that would have kept the team in-state.

State officials also explored whether pension funds could support an ownership bid, though there were indications the WNBA favors placing the franchise in a larger media market.
