EPA fines two CT firms $65K for lapses

New Haven hardware maker Sargent Manufacturing Co. on Monday agreed to $39,705 in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency penalties for violating state and federal hazardous waste laws, authorities say.

Also on Monday, Meriden copper alloy manufacturer The Miller Co., Inc. agreed to spend $25,000 to purchase emergency response equipment for the Meriden Fire Department stemming from EPA claims that the company violated the Clean Water Act. The equipment will help the fire department respond to oil spills.

EPA the Sargent settlement stemmed from its March 2011 inspection in which Sargent failed to provide a hazardous waste training program; close its waste containers and maintain enough space between them; date the waste collected; and submit a contingency plan to local authorities.

Since the failed inspection, Sargent brought its New Haven facility into compliance with all state and federal waste management laws, the agency said.

The Miller settlement stems from claims that the company overfilled its 50,000 gallon oil tank, resulting in an oil spill in Harbor Brook about 1.25 miles from Miller’s facility.
