EPA fines Hamden firm over PCBs

Federal environmental regulators have fined a Hamden consulting firm $23,212 forĀ  mishandling toxic waste.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Facility Support Services LLC failed to conduct proper soil sampling at a Milford site, resulting in PCB contaminated soils being recycled and potentially released back into the environment rather than being treated or disposed of properly.

PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, are are suspected carcinogens that can cause liver problems and skin rashes.

The owner of Facility Support Services was not immediately available for comment.Ā
