The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded $800,000 to New London’s Cross Sound Ferry Services Inc. to replace two older diesel engines with newer ones that produce fewer emissions.
Cross Sound Ferry Services provides year-round service from Connecticut to Orient Point, N.Y. and Block Island, R.I.
The total cost of the engines is $1.6 million, with the ferry company and the Connecticut Maritime Foundation providing the rest of the funding, officials said.
They said the switch is expected to reduce annual emissions of nitrogen oxides by 47 tons and particulate matter by half a ton.

Company spokesman Stan Mickus said Tuesday Cross Sound’s 530-passenger Jessica W ferry is slated to replace two of her four motors with the new diesels.
