EPA approves contentious dumping site

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last week issued a final rule that will allow dredged silt to continue to be dumped at the eastern Long Island Sound over the coming decades.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has threatened to sue if the plan moves forward, arguing continued dumping threatens the ecology of the sound.

Gov. Dannel Malloy, who supported the decision, said last week that while some dredged silt can be reused, when that isn’t possible, Connecticut needs options for disposing of the materials periodically dredged along the state’s waterways, which keeps them navigable to boats and submarines.

“The EPA’s decision ensures that the practical, environmentally sound, and cost effective option of open water disposal will remain available for dredging projects in Eastern Connecticut,” Malloy said in a statement.
