A Northeast environmental coalition on Thursday formally will ask Gov. Dannel Malloy and other regional governors to call for deeper emissions reductions through the Northeast’s cap-and-trade system, the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
Led by Environment Northeast, the coalition of environmental groups, businesses, public health organizations, consumer advocates, and academics will submit letters asking Malloy and the other regional governors to tighten the RGGI cap. Environment Northeast did not offer specifics of its request in advance of Thursday’s letters.
RGGI calls for power plants to limit the amount of greenhouse gases emitted from their processes. For generators that go over the cap, they have to pay into the system, and the money is dispersed for energy and environmental initiatives in the region.
Environment Northeast believes a stronger cap will boost Connecticut economic activity by $1.2 billion and employment by 8,200 jobs.
