Marian Chertow of New Haven, associate professor of forestry and environmental studies and management at the Yale School of Forestry & Environment Studies, will be inducted into the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place Nov. 4 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.
The theme of the 2019 class is “Women: A Force of Nature,” and Chertow is an apt standard-bearer. She is a pioneer in industrial ecology, and a leading researcher and teacher of environmental management and strategy.
Other 2019 inductees include ecologist, conservationist and organic farmer Nell Newman, a co-founder (with husband Paul) of Newman’s Own Organics, and Pequot sisters and conservationists Martha (Matt) Langevin and Elizabeth George Plouffe. n
YNHH’s Petrini to chair Albertus board
Vincent Petrini has been elected chairman of the Albertus Magnus College Board of trustees, effective Jan. 1, 2020. He succeeds Jeanne M. Dennison (AMC Class of 1978), who has chaired the board since 2015.
An AMC trustee since 2014, Petrini is senior vice president of public affairs for the Yale New Haven Health system. He joined YNHH in 2003 after serving as chief public affairs officer for Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Petrini previously served as president and principal of Tactical Communications Group and as director of communications for the Regional Transportation Authority in Chicago, Ill., the second largest mass transit system in the nation. He was graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in communications, and earned an MBA from the same school in 1993.
Smilow taps Billingsley as CMO
Kevin G. Billingsley, MD has been named chief medical officer at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center and professor of surgery at Yale School of Medicine. Billingsley starts in his new position January 2020.
Billingsley will be responsible for clinical cancer care at Yale Cancer Center, Smilow and Smilow’s network of 14 care centers throughout Connecticut, as well as clinical program development for cancer services throughout the Yale New Haven Health systems. Billingsley will oversee quality and patient-safety initiatives, evaluate and optimize team structure, assist with facilities/space planning, support the research mission, and interact and coordinate with YNHH’s clinical leadership.
Billingsley joins Yale from Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU) where he currently serves as medical director of the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, chief of surgical oncology, and the Hedinger Professor of Surgical Oncology. He is recognized as an international leader in the clinical care and research of hepatobiliary cancers and serves as co-director of OHSU’s Liver Tumor Program.
Billingsley trained in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he served as administrative chief fellow. He was graduated from Stanford University and earned his MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Billingsley is currently an MBA candidate at Oregon Health and Sciences University.
American Manufacturing Hall of Fame Honors 2019 Inductees
Hundreds of celebrants gathered Oct. 10 at the Trumbull Marriott for the induction of five Connecticut companies and an individual into the American Manufacturing Hall of Fame. The sixth annual event celebrated the innovative history of American manufacturing and raises funds for the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport. This year’s honorees: Ashcroft Inc. in Stratford; Medtronic PLC in North Haven, Microboard Processing Inc. in Seymour; Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford; and Sonics & Materials Inc. in Newtown. In addition Frank Gulluni received the American Manufacturing Hall of Fame 2019 Leadership Award.
