Aerospace and defense manufacturer Ensign-Bickford is seeking approval to expand its Simsbury campus with a new building addition and upgraded storage space, the latest in a series of investments at the site.
According to a planning application filed with the town, the company intends to add a 20-by-21-foot addition to Building No. 83 on its Simsbury campus at 640 Hopmeadow St. The added space will be used for storage, according to the application.
It also wants to demolish an existing 12-by-34-foot irrigation building and replace it with a pre-fabricated metal 8-by-8-foot magazine building to hold explosives.
The proposal comes six years after Ensign-Bickford announced it would invest $10 million in its Simsbury operations over a five- to 10-year period to create a center of excellence for electronic design and manufacturing. The company in 2019 also pledged to add 140 jobs in Simsbury over a three-year period.
Founded in 1836, Ensign-Bickford manufactures aerospace and defense systems, including explosive devices and space vehicle components.
Prescott Construction Management of Simsbury is listed as the construction manager. QA+M Architecture of Farmington prepared the permit drawings and site plans.
