Enfield seeks brownfields grant for mall redevelopment project

The town of Enfield is seeking a state brownfield remediation grant to help in the ambitious redevelopment plan for the Enfield Square Mall.

Nebraska-based Woodsonia Real Estate Group Inc. has proposed a $250 million redevelopment project at 90 Elm St., dubbed Enfield Marketplace, that would create 450 residential units, two hotels, and retail and restaurant space on the site of the 570,000-square-foot, primarily vacant mall.

The Enfield Town Council this week authorized the town manager to submit an application for the grant funding, which, if awarded, would be a major step in the process toward redevelopment.

The state Department of Economic and Community Development’s brownfield remediation grant, for up to $4 million, would be awarded to the town on behalf of the developer.

It would go toward the cost related to mall demolition and cleanup, Enfield Economic Development Director Aaron Marcavitch said.

In addition to the brownfields grant, project officials are also hoping to get at least $20 million in state Community Investment Fund grants to go mostly toward the cost of infrastructure related to the development site such as underground utilities, roads and streetscape work, Marcavitch said.
