Enfield gym-to-apartments plan approved

A development plan to convert an old school gymnasium into multifamily housing units won approval from the Enfield Planning and Zoning Commission this month.

Developer Bill Bellock of Manchester-based Bellsite Development LLC can now move forward with plans to tear down the St. Adalbert School’s 10,000-square-foot basketball gymnasium and build a two-story, 20-unit apartment building next to Higgins Park.

Bellock won approval at the board’s last meeting Dec. 15, and said he  plans to begin demolition by March 2023, with tenants taking occupancy by fall 2023.

Bellock in 2018 renovated the adjacent St. Adalbert School on Alden Avenue into a two-story, 20-unit apartment building.

The new planned apartment building would be located also at 90 Alden Ave., in the center of Enfield’s Thompsonville section.

The project is expected to cost about $2.5 million, Bellock said.

The market-rate, one bedroom, one bath units would rent for about $1,200 a month.
