Enfield Builders, Hamilton Win Pentagon Contracts

Two disparate Connecticut companies have landed Defense Department contracts, one an old hand at such business and the other, not so much.

In the less common of the two, Enfield Builders Inc. received a nearly $8 million contract to build a new practice range for the Connecticut National Guard.

The Pentagon awarded the contract to Enfield Builders for construction of a combat pistol qualification course and modified record fire range in East Haven, according to the most recent contract listings on the Defense Department’s Web site.

The Pentagon selected Enfield Builders, of 1654 King St., over 14 other bidders for the project, according to the contract listing. All work on the East Haven building is to be completed by March 31, 2011. The National Guard Bureau in Hartford was the contracting base.

A company official did not immediately return a request for comment. But according to a brief history on Enfield Builders’ Web site, the Petronella family established the company in the mid-1940s as a masonry contractor.

Over its more-than-60-year history, the company has grown through three generations into a general contracting business specializing in commercial and residential construction.

Many of their employees have been with the company for decades as well, according to the company Web site.

In a more customary contract from the Defense Department, Windsor Locks-based Hamilton Sundstrand was awarded a $43.4 million firm-fixed price contract for a variety of parts for unspecified equipment the company made for the U.S. Army.

Hamilton’s bid won over a single competitor, according to the Defense Department Web site.

All work is to be completed by Sept. 30, 2014. The Defense Logistics Agency, Redstone Arsenal, Ala., is the contracting base.

Hamilton is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp.

The company makes parts for a variety of military as well as commercial aircraft, as well as for the NASA.
