The Energize Connecticut initiative is urging residential and business ratepayers to shore up their energy use this winter, including by taking part in the initiative’s programs.
To cut down on electric and heating bills, Energize urges businesses and residents to switch to LED lighting, turn down the thermostat, and seal drafty doors and windows. Heating typically accounts for 64 percent of a home’s energy costs.
Energize CT is an initiative run by the electric and natural gas utilities like United Illuminating, Connecticut Light & Power, Connecticut Natural Gas, and Yankee Gas. It is funded off a charge on ratepayer bills.
Energize also urged business and homeowners to have proper insulation in walls, ceilings, and attics. Energize has programs where up to 50 percent of insulation costs can be covered, as well as the cost of door-sealing and light bulb replacement.
