Employers want the soft sell

Accounting and finance executives say they give great consideration to job candidates who demonstrate a good balance between technical know-how and “soft skills” like being able to communicate with other people.

More than half of respondents to a recent Robert Half Management Resources survey said they would be willing to hire someone with fewer technical skills if that candidate had strong communication and interpersonal abilities. Another 39 percent said they wouldn’t give that candidate the same consideration.

Respondents said they can measure an applicant’s communication and interpersonal skills during an interview by how well they detail their accomplishments.
