Electricity broker suspended

The Connecticut Department of Public Utility suspended Redding electricity broker Turris Associates, LLC., and its owner for allegedly defrauding state private schools out of $180,000.

In February, the state Attorney General’s Office and the Office of the Consumer Counsel charged Turris and its owner Raymond Sanzone of forging documents to double his commission to provide power for the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools.

The DPUC decided today to suspend Sanzone’s broker license, and noted that his company didn’t respond to requests seeking an explanation for the alleged forged document. If Turris is still actively soliciting customers or charging fees, the DPUC may take emergency action.

Turris is an electricity aggregator that arranges contracts between energy providers and customers, which would pay a 1 cent per kilowatt hour commission for every 10 kilowatt hours sold to the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools.

The contract in question, which was faxed to electricity supplier Hess Corporation, called for a 2.5 cent commission to be paid by the school association. The signature on the faxed contract appears different than the original contracts, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
