Groton shipyard Electric Boat has been awarded a $642 million contract modification from the U.S. military to further support submarine production.
The modification applies to a contract first awarded in 2019 for lead yard support, development studies and design efforts related to Virginia-class submarines. It’s the latest of several modifications on the work.
"This contract modification supports our efforts to deliver the submarines our Navy needs as quickly as possible," said Mark Rayha, president of General Dynamics Electric Boat. "This funding allows us to continue our design and development efforts in order to sustain and extend our nation's operational overmatch against any potential adversaries."
Electric Boat has been facing several logistical challenges to keep pace with its work producing two Virginia class boats each year, while also working on the design of the upcoming Columbia class. These have included keeping pace with hiring needs and making sure that supply chain companies can meet the challenges of increased production.
The result has been a focused effort to further strengthen the submarine industrial base and build out the yard’s own capacities.
EB employs around 24,000 people between its yards in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
