Electric Boat gets $6.5M to engineer missile tubes

Groton’s Electric Boat said the U.S. Navy has awarded it a $6.5 million contract modification to develop missile payload tubes for Virginia-class submarines.

The so-called Virginia payload module will consist of four tubes that would be inserted into the submarines, extending their hulls by as much as 80 feet and increasing strike capacity, EB said.

The modification applies to an engineering contract the Navy awarded to the company in 2010, which has a potential value of $965 million.
