Electric Boat awarded $1.1B contract for Virginia Class submarines

Groton-based General Dynamics Electric Boat said Wednesday it has been awarded a $1.1 billion contract modification to purchase long lead time materials for Virginia Class Block VI submarines.

The contract was announced this week by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).

According to Electric Boat, the Virginia-class submarines are designed from the keel up for a full range of 21st-century mission requirements, including anti-submarine and surface ship warfare and special operations support.

Electric Boat is the prime contractor and lead design yard for the Virginia class and constructs them in partnership with Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia.

“This contract modification drives continuation of the crucial demand signal that the submarine industrial base needs to invest in the capacity and materials required to increase production volume,” said Mark Rayha, president of General Dynamics Electric Boat. “Consistent funding for the supply base is essential to achieve the high-rate production the Navy requires of the entire submarine enterprise.”

The majority of the work (30%) on the $1.1 billion contract, which is being issued through the Navy, will occur in Sunnyvale, California, according to the Defense Department. About 2% of the contract will be fulfilled in Windsor Locks, according to the DOD. Work will also take place in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Minnesota, Arizona, Massachusetts, Wisconsin and New York.

Work is expected to be completed by September 2035, according to the DOD.
