Election Day underway across the state

Nearly 1.9 people are registered to vote in towns and cities holding elections today, according to Secretary of the State Denise Merrill, but she expects a low turnout. She also said monitors are in place to oversee voting in Hartford and are on-call as needed for other municipalities.

“We are on the job for Election Day, keeping an eye on things to make sure we have an orderly election. We are expecting a turnout of 30 percent of registered voters, though that will vary greatly from town to town. My office along with the State Elections Enforcement Commission will be ready to respond if any problems arise,” Merrill said.

Those who are not registered to vote can still vote today through Election Day registration. Residents are encouraged to go online to the Secretary of the State’s website to search for the Election Day registration in their city or town.

There is an Election Day hotline run in coordination with the State Elections Enforcement Commission which is 1-866-733- 2463 in addition to an email hotline elections@ct.gov should voters encounter any difficulties at the polls.

Volunteer attorneys from the Connecticut Bar Association will be on call throughout the state. Merrill’s office will use them if it determines it is necessary to receive independent confirmation of reported information. More than 100 Connecticut attorneys have volunteered to participate in the program after receiving special training in election administration.
