Major U.S. egg producer Hillandale Farms says it will invest $60 million to $70 million in its Connecticut chicken farms, starting in a few months with expansion of its Bozrah hatcheries.
Based in Flushing, Ohio, family-run Hillandle, which supplies Costco and other food retailers and distributors, announced Monday that construction will start in coming months of two cage-free facilities in the eastern Connecticut town.
One is permitted to house up to 2.1 million birds and will create 65 new jobs, Hillandale officials said.
The other will house up to 600,000 newly hatched chicks and will create 10 jobs.
State Sen. Cathy Osten (D-Sprague) hailed news of Hillandale’s expansion plans.
“As we push forward new economic opportunities in the region, I think it’s important to remember that agriculture-based businesses remain a vital part of our community,” Osten said in a statement.
