Groton marine builder Electric Boat received a $191 million contract from the U.S. Navy on Thursday to work on the replacement of the ballistic missile submarine.
The contract covers engineering and design services for the missle compartment of the new style of nuclear submarine, according to Electric Boat. The award on Thursday modifies a 2008 contract that could total $708 million if all options are exercised.
The work will engaged 3,000 Electric Boat employees, with 93 percent of the work in Groton. The rest will be performed in Quonset, R.I., Newport, R.I. and Newport News, Va.
