Eastern CT pair get USDA funds for wastewater

CORRECTION: An earlier version omitted Sen. Murphy’s office from the announcement string.

Putnam and Brooklyn are getting nearly $5.5 million in federal grants and low-interest loans to improve the two eastern Connecticut towns’ wastewater works, authorities say.

The offices of Connecticut Senators Richard Blumenthal and Christopher Murphy, and Congressman Joe Courtney announced the funding Tuesday.

The U.S. Agriculture Department awarded Putnam a $1.03 million grant and a $2.97 million loan to complete a series of upgrades to the town’s 10 sanitary pump stations. Putnam is under a consent order from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to do the work.

Brooklyn will get a $374,000 grant and a $1.12 million loan to complete its collection systems improvement project. The effort will upgrade the town’s two pump stations, which are used to transport waste for treatment. The funds will also be used to upgrade inflow and infiltration systems, drain valves and hydraulic analysis capabilities.
