East Hartford’s HORST hiring for major aerospace ramp-up

East Hartford-based HORST Engineering says it is hiring as it ramps up production of machined components and assemblies for aerospace customers.

The family-owned company is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year under a third generation of leadership.

“Our short-term goal is to sharply increase production to meet the growing needs of our customers,” said HORST Engineering President and CEO Scott Livingston. “Longer term, we plan to add new capabilities, including an extra focus on aircraft fasteners – now an important need in the industry.”

The company is adding advanced manufacturing equipment and expanding regional recruiting efforts. It is currently looking to hire more than 15 people to add to its current workforce of 115, and says it expects to continue hiring in the foreseeable future.

“Our focus is 100% on aerospace and defense, and we do the type of metal working that’s ultra precision,” Livingston said. “It just requires a lot of embedded skills.”

The company has also launched an in-house precision machining training program to help students transition to full-time roles. Two graduates have completed the program and are now employed by the company.

HORST is currently recruiting a second incoming cohort for the training program, which also helps upskill current employees. The company says it is also in the process of hiring another trainer to expand the program.

HORST moved to a renovated 100,000-square-foot building in East Hartford four years ago, with the intent of having space to expand.

Livingston said all segments of the aerospace market are currently strong, creating bottlenecks in the supply chain.

“The ramp-up has been underway now for several years, and it just remains sustained. Until production can expand, it’s going to remain a challenge,” he said.

The company was founded in 1946 by Scott Livingston’s grandfather, Harry Horst Livingston, a refugee from Germany.

Born Horst Rolf Liebenstein, he arrived in the United States in October 1938 and eventually settled in Hartford. He launched his business from the second story of a Hartford barn.
