East Hartford busing change could mean 79 layoffs

A school bus operator informed state officials this week that it would shutter its East Hartford facility, affecting up to 79 jobs, because its contract with the city’s public schools was not renewed.

The company will close its 359 Burnham St. facility at the end of July.

First Student, which is based in Ohio, said some of the employees could be transferred to other facilities. First Student provides busing in Bloomfield, Bolton, Hebron, Manchester, Somers, South Windsor, Stafford, Tolland and Vernon.

It was not immediately clear who East Hartford selected to replace First Student. The district’s business director didn’t return a call or email seeking comment.

The affected workers are represented by Teamsters Local 671 in Bloomfield, which also represents the company’s other area drivers.
