E. Torrington Stop & Shop to dedicate fuel cell

The Stop & Shop supermarket on Torringford Street in East Torrington will dedicate its new fuel cell Thursday morning to provide 94 percent of the facility’s electricity.

The 400-kilowatt fuel cell from UTC Power in South Windsor is the first installation for the grocery retailer. It was commissioned in June.

The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund paid for a portion of the fuel cell.

The E. Torrington Stop & Shop uses the thermal energy created by the fuel cell to provide heat for the facility. Coupled with the power generated by the unit, the fuel cell reduced the store’s electricity and natural gas bills by 50 percent.
