E. Haven cheese firm spends $169K on energy upgrades

East Haven food manufacturer Calabro Cheese Corp. spent $169,385 on four environmental improvement projects and expected to earn a return on investment in 14 months.

Calabro received a $56,457 incentive payment from the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund to retrofit lighting, replace refrigeration motors, repair steam traps, and seal leaks in a compressed air distribution system.

With the upgrades, Calabro expects to save $95,769 annually on energy costs. With the incentive payment factored in, the cost of the upgrades should be paid off in 1.2 years.

Orange electric utility United Illuminating, which administered the energy efficiency funds, honored Calabro with an Energy Efficiency Leadership Award on Tuesday.
