An Asian cuisine restaurant in East Hampton the state said was illegally employing minors as independent contractors is open again after inspectors shut it down last week, according to the Connecticut Department of Labor.
Acting on a tip from the parent of an underage worker at Hung Won Restaurant at 11 East High St., state inspectors determined that owner Jimmy Chan had hired five minors without the proper paperwork, hadn’t paid taxes and hadn’t paid for required worker’s compensation insurance.
The restaurant was shut down on Sept. 25, but DOL said in a statement that Chan tried to re-open the next day. The state allowed the restaurant to re-open once he showed proof that the employee paperwork and insurance were properly in place.
DOL said it will fine Chan for disregard of a stop-work order, employing minors illegally, failure to have required working papers and misclassification of employees.
