A Dutch semiconductor equipment manufacturer, ASML, says it will expand its production facility in Wilton with a $200 million investment that is expected to create 1,000 new jobs over two years.
The site is ASML’s largest research/development and manufacturing center in the United States.
The company made the announcement at its headquarters in Veldhoven, Netherlands on May 31.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves joined ASML’s CEO and President Peter Wennink during the announcement, which came as the Biden-Harris administration urged Congress to pass the Bipartisan Innovation Act. The legislation would invest $52 billion in the research, development and production of semiconductors in the United States.
ASML has more than 2,000 employees and $100 million invested in cleanrooms, labs and offices. The company’s Wilton facility is a design, engineering and production center, aimed at developing machines to create advanced chips to meet increasing global demand.
Graves said he’s grateful companies like ASML have chosen the U.S. for semiconductor manufacturing, and that the Bipartisan Innovation Act would provide additional incentives for them.
“Since day one, the Biden administration has pledged to revitalize our domestic manufacturing economy and keep our country safe,” Graves said. “Achieving these goals starts and ends with advanced semiconductors made right here in the United States.”
Semiconductors power everything from computers and cellphones to appliances and medical equipment.
Wennink said the investment will help ASML meet projected demand as the semiconductor industry continues to grow.
Graves visited ASML’s headquarters during a recent trip to Europe to strengthen transatlantic cooperation.
