DRS putting extra scrutiny on tax filings

The state’s Department of Revenue Services said it has beefed up its fraud prevention analysis methods in the wake of the hack on Anthem.

“We are adding new forms of analysis to our fraud prevention program to ensure that taxpayers receive their refunds, not identity thieves,” DRS Commissioner Kevin Sullivan said in a statement.

The additional screening may delay some refunds, or require that some direct deposits instead be issued as checks.

Any taxpayer who tries to file and is notified that DRS has already received a return in his name should notify DRS, the IRS and the Federal Trade Commission, Sullivan said.
