DRS hunting those owed refunds

Did you forget a state personal income tax refund? Look forward to a positive piece of mail from the state Department of Revenue Services.

The tax department is mailing letters to more than 25,000 business and individual taxpayers who will have until March 1 to claim more than $6.5 million in refunds before they are transferred to the State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division.

In a statement, the department said the outreach effort is part of an annual review of unclaimed refunds. The original refunds were sent to taxpayers who filed returns with the state, but checks were not cashed or debit cards lapsed. After three years, unclaimed refunds are turned over to the State Treasurer.
