United Illuminating has better customer service than Connecticut Light & Power; Connecticut Natural Gas is the most customer-friendly gas company in the state; and Aquarion Water has the best customer service of any utility in Connecticut, according to the 2010 consumer scorecards released today by the Department of Public Utility Control.
The DPUC Consumer Services Unit ranks each electric, natural gas, water, telecommunications, cable and video service provider based on the number of complaints CSU receives against how many customers a utility has.
For all sectors, the number of complaints dropped to 3,917 in 2010, a 6 percent decrease from 2009. The electric industry had the most complaints at 1,760, and the cable industry was second at 845 complaints.
Aquarion Water in Bridgeport had the fewest complaints per 100,000 customers, the fifth consecutive year the water utility has led the state in customer service.
In the electric industry, CL&P had 116 complaints for every 100,000 customers while UI had 104. Among the electric suppliers and aggregators with more than 15,000 customers in the state, New York-based Con Edison Solutions had the best score at 16 and Texas-based Verde Energy had the worst score at 109.
Of the three natural gas utilities in the state, Connecticut Natural Gas had the best score at 57, Yankee Gas was second at 88 and the Southern Connecticut Gas Company was worst at 140.
